Researchers at the University of British Columbia have found that the insurance sector is unknowingly supporting illegal fishing by covering illicit fishing boats, reported CBC.ca.
The researchers found 67 illicit vessels to be listed as insured clients of 17 different maritime insurers.
"That means that the insurers, without knowing, are helping these businesses to keep going on," a professor at the university said.
"Restricting access to insurance could play a major role in ending illegal fishing, and right now, it's a largely overlooked method," said a researcher.
