Kidnap for ransom rising in Gulf of Guinea

The U.K. P&I Club's head of loss prevention Stuart Edmonston said that piracy and kidnap are becoming more sophisticated and prevalent in the Gulf of Guinea, reported The Maritime Executive.

"The increase in kidnapping for ransom has not occurred out of the blue," says Mr. Edmonston.

"In 2014, 16% of attacks in the area involved kidnap for ransom; in 2015 it was 28% of attacks," added Mr. Edmonston.

Criminals may have shifted to kidnap for ransom as improved naval patrolling made cargo theft more difficult and dangerous, Mr. Edmonston said.
