A zoo in Poznan, Poland, has given a couple of overly amorous donkeys a reprieve as officials attempted to straddle the stubborn risk management line between delicate human sensibilities and animal rights.
Ponzan Zoo officials reportedly first separated the donkeys, Napolean and Antosia, in September, after receiving pressure from a local politician, Lydia Dudziak, who complained that the pair was engaging in sexual acts in their enclosure in plain view of young children.
However, a public outcry and social media campaign forced the zoo just weeks later to reunite the longtime equine couple that have produced six offspring.
“It was never our intention for any animals to feel uncomfortable because of their natural behaviors,” zoo officials told local media.
Given the extent to which public sentiment turned against her, Ms. Dudziak now has little to bray about.
