Japan: Regional forecasts on Nankai quake damages exceed central government estimates

Recent figures have revealed a gap in the Japanese central government's and the regional governments' projections on damage estimates in event of a large earthquake along the Nankai Trough, The Asahi Shimbun reported.

Sixteen prefectural and metropolitan governments in the country have calculated their own estimates and in some cases the figures are much higher than the central government's estimates. The Japanese government predicts that a massive seismic event along the Nankai Trough could destroy around 2.39 million buildings and result in a tsunami that will destroy around 101,500 hectares of land.
